How not to study Mandarin in Beijing

When I first made up my mind to study Mandarin in Beijing, I want to make a point of living in an area that would allow me to see and experience the best of Beijing. Besides taking Mandarin language classes, I also want to experience the culture of the country. And Beijing has some of the best culture in the entire country. From the Forbidden City, to the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics there is plenty to do and see in this city.

But besides having a good time, I want to be sure that I can actually focus on my studies. I mean, if I'm going to take the time and energy to study Mandarin in Beijing, I want to get the most out of the experience. If I spend too much time seeing the city, without paying attention to my Mandarin language classes, it would be a waste of time.

Therefore, I need to find a location that balances study with tourism. Living in an area that is full of clubs or other diversions, would be a mistake. Likewise, living too far from the action would also be doing myself a disservice. I'll be sure to take that into consideration when choosing an apartment.
